Momo are a popular type of dumpling in South Asia, particularly in Nepal, Tibet, and parts of India. They are typically filled with ground meat (like chicken, pork, or Buffalo) or vegetables, and served with a spicy dipping sauce. The dough is soft and the fillings are flavorful, making momo a delicious snack or meal. Here’s a basic momo recipe:
Ingredients:
For the dough:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 3/4 cup water (adjust as needed)
- 1 tbsp oil
For the filling:
- 1/2 lb ground chicken (or vegetables for a vegetarian option)
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2-3 garlic cloves, minced
- 1-inch piece of ginger, minced
- 1/2 cup cabbage, finely chopped
- 1/4 cup carrots, grated
- 2 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tsp sesame oil
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 tbsp chopped cilantro (optional)
- 1-2 green chilies, finely chopped (optional for spice)
For the dipping sauce (optional):
- 2 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tbsp vinegar
- 1 tsp sesame oil
- 1/2 tsp chili flakes (adjust to your preference)
- 1 tbsp brown sugar or honey
Instructions:
- Prepare the dough:
- In a bowl, combine the flour and salt. Gradually add water and knead until the dough becomes smooth and elastic.
- Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for about 30 minutes.
- Make the filling:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground chicken (or vegetables), onion, garlic, ginger, cabbage, carrots, soy sauce, sesame oil, salt, pepper, and green chilies (if using).
- Mix everything together thoroughly. Add cilantro for extra flavor if you like.
- Shape the momos:
- After the dough has rested, divide it into small balls, about the size of a golf ball. Roll each ball into a small, thin circle (about 3-4 inches in diameter).
- Place a spoonful of the filling in the center of each circle.
- Carefully fold the edges of the dough together, pinching the seams tightly to seal the filling inside. You can shape them into half-moon shapes or gather the edges to form a round pouch.
- Steam the momos:
- Grease a steamer basket or line it with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
- Place the momos in the steamer, leaving a little space between them.
- Steam for about 10-12 minutes until the dough is cooked through and slightly translucent.
- Prepare the dipping sauce:
- In a small bowl, combine soy sauce, vinegar, sesame oil, chili flakes, and brown sugar or honey. Stir until well mixed. Adjust the seasoning to taste.
- Serve:
